What is Individual Specimen Pooling?

One of the options we offer organizations looking to establish a routine, asymptomatic COVID-19 testing protocol is Individual Specimen Pooling.

Process - Individual Specimen Pooling

Individual Specimen Pooling works by collecting a swab, from an asymptomatic individual, and placing it into a tube labeled for that specific person. Once at the lab, we combine those specimens into groups and process them as one pooled specimen. If the pooled specimen is negative, each person receives a diagnostic result of negative. If the pooled sample is positive, we go back and run each specimen individually to find the positive case(s). Then each individual receives a diagnostic result. This lab technique creates efficiencies and lowers the cost of testing for our clients by 75%, as compared to individual processing.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any restrictions on who can participate in asymptomatic testing?

Those experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath, change in taste or smell, or fatigue should NOT participate in pod testing. Additionally, those who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past three months, or have been in contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, should NOT participate.

How long does it take to get results?

Results are available in approximately 24-48 hours from the time the specimens are received in the lab. Each individual will be notified, via email, when results are available. The email will include simple instructions on how to retrieve the result.

Does PathAI Diagnostics report test results to public health authorities?

Yes. We will report all COVID-19 results, both positive and negative, to the appropriate public health agency.

Do you supply the swabs and tubes for testing?

Yes. We provide all of the necessary supplies for COVID-19 testing.

Do you require the “deep” swab?

We offer both nasal and nasopharyngeal swabs for our clients to use. Most of our organizational clients choose to use nasal swabs due to ease of collection.

What type of COVID test do you offer?

We exclusively offer the RT-PCR test, and can process specimens on multiple platforms.
